Matt Cerda

Hitting & Catching Instructor

Matt Cerda was born and raised in Oceanside, California where he began building his impressive baseball resume very quickly.

He was the lefty leadoff hitter on the Oceanside Little League World Series team in 2001. They made a deep run in the tournament, only to be beaten by the infamous New York team, who pitched Danny Almonte to beat Oceanside in the elimination round. It was later discovered that Almonte was over the age requirement, and shouldn’t have been allowed to participate.

After an impressive 4-year varsity career at Oceanside High School, Matt signed to play Division 1 ball at the University of San Diego. He never stepped foot on campus. The Chicago Cubs drafted Matt in the 4th round of the 2008 MLB Draft.

Cerda climbed through the Cubs’ system, driving in 80 runs in 2010 with Peoria Chiefs and making the Midwest League’s All-Star team. He hit .283 with Dayton in 2011 and made the Florida State League’s All-Star team. He then hit .266 in his last season with the AA Tennessee Smokies.

After a few injuries caused him to miss time, Matt decided it was time to hang em’ up after a 5-year professional career. He currently gives hitting, catching, and infield lessons at Fletcher’s Hitting Center in central Illinois.
